  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

This disc from Urck Recordings presents recordings made by sound recordist and musician Jerry Lloyd over ten years of travel (between 1998 and 2008) through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, India, Morocco, Egypt, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sumatra & Bali. This ethno-musicology lark sounds like a great excuse for an extended holiday, does it not? The globetrotting tracklist merges into a single stream of global sound, which might prove disorientating were it not for fairly detailed liner notes, documenting the origins and circumstances of each recording. You'll get to hear theatre performances, street musicians, virtuosic tabla solos, calls to prayer and even Indonesian stick fighting. The often rather lo-fi recordings only add to the sense that this is a very personal travelogue, offering an alternate slant on the field recording genre to the sort of thing you'd get from a Nonesuch Explorer release, for example. That said, the album closes on a relatively crystalline document of a gamelan performance from Bali by Chandra Wirabhuanan's Ubud-based group, which draws this audio journal to a suitably magical finish.

Includes unlimited streaming of Jalan Jalan - Traditional Music Recordings By Jerry Lloyd via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.
